Pests and Diseases: A Small-Space Reference

How to actually work out what's wrong with a struggling plant, the pests and diseases most likely to turn up in a small garden or on a windowsill, and the least-toxic-first approach to dealing with each one properly.

Diagnose before you treat

The single most common mistake in dealing with a plant problem is treating the wrong thing. A leaf with brown patches could be scorch, a fungal disease, a nutrient deficiency, or genuine pest damage, and each one wants a completely different response. Guessing from a single photo, or reaching for whatever spray happens to be under the sink, wastes time and can occasionally make things worse.

A few minutes of proper observation gets you much further than an immediate reaction.

Pattern. Is the damage even across the whole plant, or concentrated in one area? Even, all-over yellowing tends to point toward a feeding, watering or environmental issue. Patchy, localised damage points more toward a pest or a localised disease.

Location. Older, lower leaves affected first usually points toward a nutrient issue, since plants often sacrifice older growth to support new growth when resources are short. New growth affected first is more typical of aphids, which prefer soft, tender tissue, or a watering problem affecting the whole plant's uptake.

Timing and weather. A sudden problem after a hot spell suggests scorch or heat stress. A problem appearing after a period of wet, still weather suggests a fungal disease, since most fungal problems thrive in damp, poorly ventilated conditions.

Speed of onset. Pest damage often develops gradually and visibly worsens day by day if left unchecked. A disease can spread rapidly once established, sometimes overnight in humid conditions. A physiological problem (like scorch or a nutrient deficiency) tends to appear more uniformly and doesn't spread from a point in the way a living pest or pathogen does.

Check the culprit directly. Turn leaves over and look at stems and the base of the plant. Many pests are visible if you actually look, rather than only inspecting the damage itself.

Common pests

Aphids are probably the most universally recognised garden pest: small, soft-bodied insects, usually green, black or grey, clustering on new growth and flower buds. They suck sap, weakening the plant and often leaving a sticky residue (honeydew) that can lead to sooty mould growing on top of it. A strong jet of water, or a gentle wipe with a damp cloth, dislodges light infestations. Encouraging ladybirds and lacewings, both of which eat aphids in large numbers, is a genuinely effective long-term control in an outdoor container garden.

Spider mites thrive in exactly the hot, dry conditions covered in our piece on houseplants in a heatwave. Nearly invisible to the naked eye, they show up as fine webbing and a dull, stippled, slightly bronzed look to leaves, usually starting on the undersides. Increasing humidity (grouping plants, standing pots on damp pebble trays) and rinsing affected foliage regularly both help, since spider mites specifically dislike humid conditions.

Whitefly are small, white, moth-like insects that flutter up in a small cloud when a plant is disturbed. Common on tomatoes and many houseplants. Yellow sticky traps catch adults effectively, and a soap-based spray (a proper insecticidal soap, not washing-up liquid, which can damage leaf surfaces) treats an established infestation.

Slugs and snails are the classic enemy of anything soft and leafy in a UK garden, particularly after rain following a dry spell. They leave ragged holes in leaves and a telltale silvery slime trail. Beer traps, copper tape around pot rims, and picking them off by torchlight in the evening are all genuinely effective, low-toxicity approaches. Raising pots off the ground on feet also makes access considerably harder for both.

Vine weevil is a particular problem for container plants. The adult beetle notches leaf edges, which is unsightly but rarely fatal; the real damage comes from the grubs, which live in the compost and eat roots, sometimes causing a plant to collapse suddenly with seemingly no warning. If a container plant wilts and dies despite apparently fine watering, tip it out and check the compost for small, white, C-shaped grubs. Fungus gnats are the small flies that hover around houseplant compost, more a nuisance than a serious threat to an established plant, though their larvae can damage the roots of young seedlings. They thrive in consistently damp compost, so letting the top layer dry out properly between waterings is usually enough to break the cycle. Sticky traps catch the adults.

Leaf miners create distinctive pale, winding tunnels within the leaf itself, the visible trail of a tiny larva feeding between the upper and lower leaf surfaces. Common on beetroot, spinach, chard and some ornamentals. Removing and disposing of affected leaves as soon as the tunnels appear usually keeps a small infestation from spreading, since the damage is largely cosmetic on an otherwise healthy plant.

Scale insects look more like small, immobile brown or grey bumps than typical insects, often clustered along stems and the midribs of leaves, and are easily mistaken for a plant disease or an odd growth at first glance. They feed on sap in the same way aphids do and produce the same sticky honeydew residue. Because their waxy shell protects them from most sprays, physical removal — scraping or wiping them off with a cloth dipped in diluted horticultural soap — is usually the most effective first response.

Common diseases

Powdery mildew shows as a white or grey powdery coating across leaves, stems and sometimes flower buds. It's driven largely by poor airflow and inconsistent watering (particularly dry roots combined with humid air), rather than by wet leaves specifically as many people assume. Improving spacing between plants, watering consistently at the roots, and removing badly affected leaves all help. Roses, courgettes and many ornamentals are particularly prone.

Black spot is a rose-specific fungal disease showing as black or purple-black circular spots on leaves, usually with yellowing around them, eventually causing leaf drop. Grey mould (botrytis) appears as a fuzzy grey-brown coating, typically on damaged, dying or overly soft plant tissue, particularly in cool, damp, poorly ventilated conditions. It's opportunistic, generally moving in on plant material that's already stressed or damaged rather than attacking healthy tissue outright. Removing affected material promptly and improving airflow are the key responses.

Downy mildew is often confused with powdery mildew but is a genuinely different disease, showing as yellow or pale patches on the upper leaf surface with a fuzzy grey-purple growth on the underside directly beneath, usually worse in cool, damp, still conditions rather than the drier conditions powdery mildew prefers. Salad crops, brassicas and some ornamentals are particularly susceptible. Improving airflow, avoiding overhead watering, and removing affected leaves promptly are the main non-chemical responses, and spacing plants further apart than feels necessary genuinely helps prevent it taking hold in the first place.

Damping off is a seedling-specific problem: young seedlings suddenly collapse at the base and die, often within a day, usually caused by fungal pathogens thriving in overly wet, poorly ventilated compost. Prevention matters far more than treatment here, since there's rarely a way back once it's set in. Use fresh, clean seed compost, avoid overwatering young seedlings, and ensure good airflow around trays.

Not everything is a pest or disease

A genuinely large proportion of "what's wrong with my plant" questions turn out to be physiological problems: something about growing conditions, not a living organism attacking the plant. Treating these as if they were pests or disease wastes effort and can delay the actual fix.

Blossom end rot, a dark, sunken patch at the base of tomatoes and courgettes, is caused by inconsistent watering disrupting calcium uptake, not by any pest or pathogen. No spray fixes it; consistent watering does, along the lines set out in how to water your plants properly.

If a "problem" isn't spreading, isn't visibly a living organism, and correlates clearly with a specific growing condition (a hot windowsill, inconsistent watering, a missed feed), it's very likely physiological rather than pest or disease-related.

Prevention: what actually reduces problems long-term

Airflow. Overcrowded plants, particularly indoors or in a still courtyard, create exactly the humid, stagnant conditions most fungal diseases thrive in. Space plants generously and avoid letting foliage sit permanently wet or pressed together.

Watering at the roots, not the leaves. Wet foliage, particularly overnight, is one of the most reliable ways to invite fungal problems. Water at the base of the plant, ideally in the morning so any splashed leaves dry through the day — the same principle covered in container growing fundamentals.

Quarantine new plants. A new houseplant or nursery-bought plant is a common way pests like spider mites or whitefly enter a collection. Keep new arrivals away from existing plants for a week or two and check them closely before introducing them properly.

Choose resistant varieties where they exist. Many modern rose, tomato and cucumber varieties are bred with genuine resistance to common diseases like black spot or powdery mildew. Checking a variety's disease resistance before buying is a real, low-effort form of prevention.

Keep plants generally healthy. A stressed plant, whether from underfeeding, inconsistent watering, or heat stress, is measurably more vulnerable to both pests and disease than a well-cared-for one. Prevention is often just good basic care rather than a separate, specific action.

Treat the least invasive way first

The honest, tested approach to any pest or disease problem is to start with the gentlest intervention and escalate only if it doesn't work, rather than reaching immediately for the strongest available product.

For most pests: physical removal (wiping, hosing, hand-picking) first, then biological controls (nematodes for vine weevil, encouraging natural predators for aphids), then targeted, least-toxic sprays (insecticidal soap, horticultural oil) only if the problem persists and is genuinely threatening the plant.

For most diseases: removing affected material and improving growing conditions (airflow, watering technique) first, since most fungal diseases are opportunistic and thrive on stressed or poorly ventilated plants. Fungicidal treatment is rarely necessary for the everyday problems a small-space garden encounters, and improving conditions usually resolves recurring issues far more durably than repeated spraying ever does.

This isn't about avoiding chemical treatments on principle. It's that the gentler options are usually just as effective for the problems a small garden actually faces, and they don't carry the downsides — harm to pollinators and beneficial insects, cost, the need to repeat treatment — that stronger products do.

Common mistakes

Treating before diagnosing. Spraying for a pest that turns out to be a physiological problem wastes the treatment and delays the actual fix.

Assuming wet leaves cause mildew. It's poor airflow and inconsistent watering that's the real driver, not moisture on the foliage itself. Watering technique and spacing matter more than avoiding all contact with water.

Composting diseased material. Fallen leaves affected by black spot, powdery mildew or similar fungal problems should go in general waste, not the compost bin, since most home composting doesn't get hot enough to kill the spores, and they'll simply reinfect the garden next year.

Ignoring a new plant's quarantine period. A single infested new arrival can spread spider mites or whitefly through an entire windowsill collection within a couple of weeks.

Reaching for the strongest spray first. Escalating straight to a chemical treatment when physical removal or improved conditions would have solved the problem, at greater cost and with more collateral impact on pollinators and beneficial insects.

How do I know if my plant has a pest, a disease, or just a growing problem?

Check whether the issue is spreading from a point (suggesting a living pest or pathogen), whether it correlates with a specific condition like heat, inconsistent watering or a missed feed (suggesting a physiological problem), and physically inspect the plant for visible insects or fungal growth before assuming either way.

Are spider mites really worse in a heatwave?

Why does my rose keep getting black spot every year?

Is it safe to use washing-up liquid as an insecticidal spray?

Not really recommended. Ordinary washing-up liquid can damage leaf surfaces and strip protective waxy coatings. A proper insecticidal soap, formulated for plant use, is a safer and more genuinely effective choice.

My container plant just collapsed with no warning. What happened?

Check the compost for vine weevil grubs, particularly if watering has been normal and there's no visible pest damage on the leaves. The grubs feed on roots underground, often causing sudden collapse with little prior warning above soil level.

Why do my tomatoes get a dark patch on the bottom even though I don't see any pests?

That's blossom end rot, a physiological problem caused by inconsistent watering disrupting calcium uptake, not a pest or disease. No spray will fix it; consistent, even watering is the actual solution.

Should I always treat pests with chemicals to be sure they're gone?
